As a local garage door company in Huntington Beach, one of the most common questions homeowners ask after a repair is, “How can I maintain my garage door and prevent future problems?”

While proper garage door maintenance follows many of the same principles throughout Orange County, Huntington Beach presents unique environmental challenges. Homes located closer to the Pacific Ocean are exposed to salt air, moisture, and wind-blown sand, all of which accelerate wear on garage door components. As a result, coastal and oceanfront properties often require more frequent inspections and maintenance than homes located farther inland.

In this guide, we’ll review Huntington Beach neighborhoods, discuss the most common garage door issues affecting each area, explain how your location within the city influences your garage door’s condition, and outline effective maintenance steps that can help extend the life of your system.

Huntington Beach Neighborhoods

From a garage door maintenance perspective, Huntington Beach can generally be divided into two categories: coastal neighborhoods located near the ocean and inland neighborhoods situated farther from the beach. The environmental conditions in each area can affect garage doors differently.

Neighborhoods Most Impacted by the Ocean

Surfside, Sunset Beach, Huntington Harbour, Seapoint, Downtown Huntington Beach, Huntington by the Sea, and neighborhoods surrounding Pacific City experience the greatest exposure to coastal conditions.

The most common garage door problems in Huntington Beach coastal areas include:

Rust and corrosion on metal components such as springs, cables, hinges, tracks, brackets, and other hardware.

Increased wear on rollers, bearings, hinges, and springs caused by wind-blown sand entering moving components.

Excessive friction, squeaking, grinding, and other operational noise resulting from corrosion and abrasive debris.

Corrosion and deterioration of exposed electrical connections, safety sensors, and garage door opener components.

Premature failure of hardware and moving parts due to continuous exposure to salt-laden air.

Neighborhoods Less Impacted by Coastal Conditions

Bolsa Chica-Heil, Goldenwest, Wintersburg, Oak View, Newland, Garfield, Yorktown, Adams, and the Huntington Landmark/Edison High School area are generally less affected by ocean-related corrosion and sand intrusion.

The most common garage door problems in these neighborhoods are typically associated with normal wear and daily use, including:

Broken garage door springs.

Worn rollers and bearings.

Frayed or snapped lift cables.

Loose or damaged hardware.

Buckled or damaged door sections.

Worn garage door opener motors, belts, and drive systems.

Remote-control signal interference or reduced operating range.

Progressive mechanical wear across springs, rollers, cables, and drive components due to normal long-term operation.

How Often Should Huntington Beach Homeowners Service Their Garage Doors?

Your maintenance interval depends largely on your proximity to the ocean.

Oceanfront neighborhoods: Every 3–6 months

Inland neighborhoods: Every 6–12 months

Professional inspection: Annually

The neighborhood categories discussed above can help you determine how frequently your garage door should be inspected and maintained. However, garage doors that are used heavily (more than 5-6 times per day) may also benefit from a shorter maintenance interval of 3–6 months.

Garage Door Components That Require Inspection and What to Look For

Springs and Counterbalance Assembly: Check for rust, corrosion, gaps in the coils, and other signs of wear. Test the door balance periodically. Inspect the torsion or extension spring system for abnormal conditions such as grinding noises, metal shavings, excessive wear, loose hardware, or component misalignment.

Cables: Inspect the cables and bottom cable loops for rust, fraying, kinks, or broken strands.

Rollers: Check for excessive wear, cracking, wobbling, or looseness.

Hinges: Inspect for cracks, excessive wear, loose fasteners, and corrosion.

Tracks and Support Brackets: Check for rust, loose brackets, loose fasteners, dents, and track misalignment.

Weather Seals (Bottom Seal and Trim Molding): With the door fully closed, inspect for gaps between the door and the garage floor, as well as gaps around the perimeter of the door opening.

Garage Door Opener, Wiring, and Safety Sensors: Inspect the opener sprocket for excessive wear, looseness, or rust. Check exposed wiring for corrosion or damage. Test the auto-reverse safety system and verify that the photo-eye sensors are properly aligned and functioning.

Quick Garage Door Maintenance Checklist for Huntington Beach Homes

Use Champion’s CLIS method for simple garage door maintenance: Clean, Lubricate, Inspect, Sound. Follow the checklist below to help extend the life of your garage door system:

Wash the door exterior periodically to remove salt residue, dirt, and debris.

Clean the tracks and remove accumulated debris.

Lubricate rollers, hinges, and bearings with a garage door-approved lubricant. Springs generally do not require lubrication unless they begin making popping noises or show signs of rust or corrosion.

Tighten loose nuts, bolts, and mounting hardware.

Inspect weatherstripping and replace damaged seals as needed.

Test the garage door balance.

Test the auto-reverse safety system.

Verify proper sensor alignment and operation.

Inspect metal components for rust and corrosion, particularly in coastal neighborhoods.

Perform a sound check for unusual noises such as grinding, squeaking, scraping, or popping during operation.

Schedule a professional inspection at least once per year.

Coastal Garage Door Maintenance Tips for Huntington Beach Homeowners

While the effects of Huntington Beach’s coastal environment cannot be completely eliminated, they can be minimized. Use the following Champion pro tips to help extend the lifespan of your garage door system and reduce the likelihood of needing garage door repair in Huntington Beach.

Use sealed ball-bearing rollers to help protect against wear caused by wind-blown sand and debris.

Ensure your garage door is properly sealed to minimize sand, moisture, and debris intrusion around hinges, bearings, rollers, and other moving components.

Install galvanized garage door springs, cables, and hardware to help delay corrosion and rust-related failures.

Choose steel or aluminum garage doors with durable powder-coated finishes, or wood garage doors protected with marine-grade coatings.

Wash your garage door exterior periodically to remove accumulated salt residue and contaminants.

Clean garage door hardware and moving components using a soft brush and blower to remove sand, dust, and debris. Only then apply lubricant.

Avoid washing or using water on springs, bearings, rollers, garage door openers, electrical components, and exposed wiring. Avoid using pressure washers on your garage door, as they may damage the finish and force moisture into sensitive components.

Use only lubricants designed for moving and rotating components. Dry lubricants are preferred.

Avoid using rust dissolvers, penetrating oils, or rust removers, as they can strip protective coatings and leave components inadequately protected. Avoid using sticky lubricants such as grease, as they can attract and retain sand, dust, and debris over time.

Schedule regular maintenance inspections to identify corrosion and wear before they lead to component failure.

Final Thoughts on Garage Door Maintenance in Huntington Beach

Proper garage door maintenance in Huntington Beach comes down to understanding your environment and staying ahead of wear before it becomes a costly repair. Coastal exposure, salt air, and daily use all contribute to how quickly garage door components degrade.

Whether you live near the ocean or inland, routine inspections, proper maintenance, and timely repairs can significantly reduce the need for garage door repair in Huntington Beach, extend system lifespan, and improve safety and performance year-round.

Garage doors in Orange County experience normal wear from regular use and seasonal weather changes. Springs, rollers, and openers gradually wear down and eventually require service or replacement. However, homeowners in Huntington Beach and other coastal areas often experience faster wear due to coastal exposure, making garage door repair in Huntington Beach a more common service need.

The difference comes down to environment. Coastal exposure in Huntington Beach bringssalt air, higher humidity, marine layer moisture, and wind-blown sand into the system. These conditions accelerate corrosion, increase friction, and place strain on springs, rollers, cables, and opener components, leading to earlier mechanical failure compared to inland areas.

These impacts are driven by a few key coastal factors, each affecting garage door performance in a different way.

Salt Air and Corrosion

Huntington Beach’s coastal air carries salt particles that settle on exposed metal components year-round, accelerating corrosion on springs, cables, hinges, bearings, fasteners, and track hardware.

As corrosion starts to affect the system, metal surfaces roughen and friction increases. Springs weaken sooner, cables fray faster, and the door no longer opens and closes as smoothly as it once did. Homes closer to the coast, such as in Huntington Harbour, Sunset Beach, and ocean-facing neighborhoods, often experience more frequent wear.

Rusted garage door torsion system components

Even corrosion-resistant or galvanized components slow the process rather than completely eliminating it, making routine maintenance essential in coastal environments.

Moisture and Mechanical Strain

Humidity, marine layer conditions, and overnight condensation contribute to consistent moisture exposure in Huntington Beach garages. Compared to inland areas where components dry quickly, coastal systems remain damp for longer periods. This prolonged dampness breaks down lubrication and increases resistance in moving parts.

Rollers may become noisy, hinges and springs stiffen, and the door may require more force to operate while garage door openers must work harder, adding strain to the entire system. These conditions often lead to symptoms such as noisy operation and jerky movement, which worsen when left unaddressed.

Sand, Dust, and Track Contamination

Coastal winds carry sand and dust that can accumulate in garage door tracks, bearings, spring coils and rollers. Even small amounts of debris increase friction and affect smooth operation.

Parts and hardware exposed to consistent contamination wear down, leading to noise, vibration, and operational resistance. Sensors may also become misaligned or obstructed, resulting in intermittent performance issues or door reversals.

Garage door roller affected by sand and debris buildup

Homes in areas with stronger winds or closer proximity to the coastline experience faster buildup due to increased deposition of sand, salt aerosols, and moisture carried by coastal air movement.

What Huntington Beach Homeowners Should Do

Start with a simple inspection twice a year. Check springs, cables, rollers, and tracks for rust, fraying, and wear. Pay attention to changes in movement such as slower operation, noise, or hesitation which often indicate developing friction.

Keep moving parts lightly lubricated, especially rollers and hinges. Coastal moisture and salt exposure reduce lubrication effectiveness, making periodic reapplication important for smooth operation and reduced opener strain.

Clear debris from tracks and hardware when buildup appears. Sand and dust can restrict movement and increase wear. Light cleaning using a soft brush or blower can help maintain performance, but should be done carefully to avoid forcing particles deeper into tight components.

Pay attention to early warning signs rather than waiting for failure. Small changes in performance often indicate developing wear that can be corrected before major repairs are needed.

Check weatherstripping and bottom seals. Worn or cracked seals allow sand, moisture, and salt air to enter the garage more easily. Also avoid leaving the garage door partially open for extended periods. In coastal conditions, even small openings allow wind-driven sand, humidity, and salt particles to enter the garage.

For coastal homes, annual professional maintenance is strongly recommended. A full inspection helps maintain balance, identify corrosion early, and address worn components before they lead to unexpected breakdowns.

Life on the Coast Requires Properly Maintained Garage Doors

Garage doors in Huntington Beach face harsher operating conditions than inland Orange County due to constant exposure to salt air, moisture, and coastal debris. These environmental factors accelerate wear across all major components, making preventive maintenance more important than reactive repair.

With consistent inspection and maintenance, homeowners can reduce the chance of sudden breakdowns, extend system lifespan, and maintain reliable garage door performance in a coastal environment.

Garage doors are one of the most heavily used mechanical systems in a home, yet they’re often overlooked until something stops working. When a door begins to feel heavier than usual, moves unevenly, or makes unfamiliar noises, these changes are rarely random. They’re often early indicators of mechanical wear that can worsen if ignored.

Understanding how overhead door systems function and when professional garage door repair becomes necessary can help homeowners avoid unnecessary damage, safety risks, and costly replacements.

Why Garage Doors Fail Gradually, Not Suddenly

Most garage door issues develop over time. Springs fatigue through thousands of open-and-close cycles. Cables slowly wear where they wrap around drums. Rollers, bearings, and hinges degrade from friction and load. Because these components work together as a system, stress in one area often affects others.

A common misconception is that garage door problems are isolated. In reality, a worn spring can place extra strain on cables and openers. Track misalignment can accelerate roller wear. Addressing only the visible symptom often leaves the underlying issue unresolved.

Common Signs a Garage Door Needs Repair

Homeowners don’t need technical knowledge to recognize when something isn’t right. Some of the most common warning signs include:

A loud bang or popping sound followed by a door that won’t open

A door that lifts only a few inches or feels unusually heavy

Grinding, squeaking, or scraping noises during operation

A door that closes part way and reverses

Crooked movement or doors that come off track

Openers that run but don’t move the door

Each of these symptoms points to a different mechanical issue, but all require proper diagnosis before repair decisions are made.

Why Inspection Matters More Than Guessing

Professional garage door repair is not just about replacing parts. A proper service begins with a system-level inspection that evaluates how all components interact. This includes spring sizing, cable condition, drum alignment, track stability, door balance, and opener force settings.

Skipping inspection can lead to mismatched parts, repeated failures, or unsafe operation. In contrast, inspection-based repair helps ensure the door operates smoothly and predictably after service is completed.

Repair vs. Replacement: How Homeowners Decide

Repair is often the practical option when the door structure is intact and most parts are still in good condition, based on inspection findings. It’s also commonly chosen when homeowners need the garage operational without waiting for replacement and installation arrangements such as ordering and preparing the door or multiple installation visits.

Replacement may make more sense when structural panels are damaged, parts are no longer compatible, or repeated repairs become unavoidable. The key is evaluating condition properly, timing, and long-term use, not just the cost.

Safety Considerations Homeowners Should Know

Garage door systems contain components under high tension, particularly springs, cables, and bottom brackets. Attempting DIY repairs in these areas can lead to serious injury. Even routine adjustments can be dangerous without proper tools and training.

For safety reasons, issues involving loss of door control, broken springs, or off-track movement are best handled by trained professionals familiar with residential garage door systems.

Choosing a Qualified Garage Door Repair Company

When professional service is needed, homeowners should look for licensed garage door repair companies that focus on inspection and clear explanations. In California, contractor credentials can be verified through the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) to confirm licensing and compliance before scheduling service.

Learn more about how to verify a licensed garage door repair company here.
Garage door problems don’t always start with loud noises or complete breakdowns. In many homes, the earliest warning signs appear quietly, especially when it comes to garage door cables. These components do much of the heavy lifting during daily operation, yet they’re often overlooked until something goes wrong.

In regions like Orange County and South Los Angeles, garage doors are used frequently as primary entry points. Over time, daily use combined with door weight and environmental exposure, can place steady strain on the cable system. When cables begin to wear or shift out of position, the door may still operate for a while, masking a developing issue.

Champion Garage Door frequently encounters cable-related problems that homeowners initially mistake for opener issues or track alignment concerns.

Why Cable Problems Can Sometimes Be Hard to Spot Early

Unlike springs or openers, garage door cables don’t usually fail all at once. Wear tends to develop internally, often hidden within the cable strands or near the drums. Therefore, early-stage cable issues may only show up as subtle changes in door movement or balance.

Homeowners may notice the door lifting unevenly, hesitating during operation, or making unusual sounds. In many cases, these symptoms are gradual enough to be ignored, allowing the problem to progress unnoticed.

How Cable Issues Are Often Connected to Other Door Components

Garage door systems function as a set of interdependent parts. When one component begins to wear, others are often affected. Cable problems frequently appear alongside wear in rollers, bearings, springs, or track alignment.

For example, incorrect spring tension can place extra load on one cable, while worn rollers can increase friction during movement. Over time, these conditions can cause cables to loosen, fray, or slip off the drum.

This interconnected nature is why experienced technicians evaluate the entire door system when addressing cable concerns, rather than focusing on a single visible issue.

The Safety Considerations Homeowners Should Understand

Garage door cables operate under constant tension and help manage the weight of the door during every cycle. When a cable is compromised, the door may no longer move in a controlled or balanced manner. In more severe cases, one side of the door can drop unexpectedly, slam shut or shift out of alignment.

Because of the forces involved, cable-related work requires controlled handling and proper tools. Attempting to adjust or repair cables without the right experience can increase the risk of injury or additional system damage.

When Professional Evaluation Makes a Difference

Catching cable issues early can help prevent larger repairs and unexpected downtime. Regular inspections, particularly for doors that see heavy daily use or support heavier panels, can reveal early signs of wear before failure occurs.

Professional evaluation also helps determine whether a cable issue is isolated or connected to other components that may need attention to keep the door operating evenly.

Supporting Reliable Garage Door Performance

While garage door cables are not the most visible part of the system, their condition directly affects performance, safety, and reliability. Understanding how cable issues develop can help homeowners recognize when it’s time to seek professional guidance rather than waiting for a sudden failure.

Champion Garage Door provides garage door cable repair services for residential systems throughout Orange County and South Los Angeles. Their work focuses on careful evaluation, appropriate service recommendations, and maintaining balanced door operation over time.

For homeowners noticing changes in door movement or balance, addressing cable concerns early remains one of the most effective ways to avoid more disruptive repairs later on.

For decades, Chamberlain and LiftMaster garage door openers were known for their simplicity, broad compatibility, and reliability. Installers often compared the brand to a dependable, no-nonsense opener system that worked with most vehicles and accessories without complication.

In recent years, however, garage door professionals and homeowners have begun to notice changes in product behavior, compatibility, and design priorities. This article looks at those changes, focusing on installer feedback, product behavior, and how newer systems compare to earlier generations.

Early Signs: Sensitivity Issues in Side-Mount Openers

One of the first concerns emerged with redesigned side-mount opener models. Installers began reporting sensitivity-related issues that differed from earlier units such as excessive force error messages and inconsistent opening or closing under normal conditions.

Side-mount openers have always required a more accurate installation, but newer models appear less tolerant of minor changes in door balance or alignment. Installers report increased operational interruptions and fault conditions, even when no clear mechanical failure is present.

These issues did not affect every installation, but they marked the beginning of a shift away from the reliable and installer-friendly designs the brand was previously known for.

Security+ 3.0 and the Move Away From Backward Compatibility

The release of Security+ 3.0 openers introduced a more visible change: a complete break from backward compatibility.

Unlike earlier systems, Security+ 3.0 does not work with older remotes, keypads, or many universal accessories. Vehicle-based controls, including HomeLink systems, have also shown inconsistent or unavailable compatibility based on early service feedback.

From an installer perspective, this means:

Additional inventory requirements

Potential longer setup times

More complexity during service visits

For homeowners, it often means replacing remotes, keypads, and other accessories that worked for years with previous systems.

Chamberlain Security+ 3.0 Garage Door Opener

Programming Complexity and Usability Changes

Earlier Chamberlain and LiftMaster models were known for straightforward programming. Newer systems require timed multi-step pairing processes that are less intuitive, especially for homeowners attempting to install and program their openers on their own without professional help.

While these changes may improve pairing control and security, they also increase the likelihood of errors and service calls, particularly during future repairs or accessory replacements.

Limited Functional Gains Despite Major Changes

Despite the redesigns and ecosystem changes, installers report that core performance areas remain largely unchanged:

Door speed and motor output

Basic safety systems

Day-to-day operating behavior

For many professionals, all recent updates raise a practical question: what problem was solved?

The restrictions introduced with newer systems often feel more significant than the functional improvements delivered.

A Broader Shift in Product Design

The Blackstone Group acquired a majority stake in the Chamberlain Group in 2021. Since that time, the brand has steadily moved toward feature-driven products with tighter ecosystem control.

While ownership changes do not automatically explain design decisions, the timing aligns with a noticeable shift toward:

Closed-system accessories

Reduced cross-compatibility

Increased long-term ownership costs

These patterns mirror trends seen in other home technology sectors following private equity involvement, though Chamberlain has not publicly linked these decisions to ownership changes.

What All of This Means for Homeowners and Installers

Security+ 3.0 and newer opener designs are not inherently unusable or unsafe. However, they represent a different ownership experience than previous generations.

Both professional installers and consumers should consider:

Vehicle and accessory compatibility

Smart home integration compatibility

Long-term service expectations

Whether newer features offer practical value for their household

On top of that installers are adjusting to:

Potential longer setup times

Supporting multiple system generations

Managing customer expectations during upgrades and replacements

Final Perspective

For years, Chamberlain and LiftMaster built their reputation on products that installers trusted and homeowners rarely had to think about. The concern today isn’t tied to a single update or feature, but to a pattern of design and business decisions that prioritize control and complexity over usability.

Sensitivity issues in newer side-mount openers, tighter accessory restrictions, and more involved setup processes all point to a shift away from the practical approach that once defined the brand. These changes don’t necessarily make the products unusable, but they do change who they are best suited for.

For homeowners and garage door repair professionals alike, the takeaway is simple: newer doesn’t automatically mean better. Understanding how current models differ from earlier generations, not just in features, but in flexibility and serviceability, matters more than ever when choosing a garage door opener.

A Hyrum garage door installer has been arrested and charged with multiple felonies after allegedly taking thousands of dollars from customers and never completing the work.

According to the Cache County Sheriff’s Office, 41-year-old Kyle Bret Hansen, owner of Apex Garage Doors, collected more than $11,000 in payments from two customers for new garage doors that were never installed.

Court documents state one homeowner paid Hansen $4,065 for a new garage door in June. When the job went unfinished, Hansen allegedly offered a string of excuses, including supply delays, phone issues, scheduling problems, and even a family emergency.

The situation escalated when that customer spoke with a neighbor, who reported paying Hansen $7,308 for similar work that was also never completed. The neighbor said they contacted Hansen more than 15 times before he stopped responding altogether.

When questioned by deputies, Hansen claimed his accounting company should have issued refunds, though no money was ever returned. Investigators also discovered that Apex Garage Doors’ business license had been dissolved after Hansen failed to renew it.

Criminal Charges Filed

Hansen was briefly booked into the Cache County Jail before being released. He has since made an initial court appearance in Logan’s 1st District Court, where prosecutors filed two cases against him. Charges include three counts of theft by deception and one count of communications fraud, all felonies. If convicted, Hansen could face more than 15 years in prison.

Protecting Yourself from Garage Door Repair Fraud

This case and other instances of defrauding customers, false pretense, and overcharging by fake garage door companies highlight the risks unwary homeowners face when hiring garage door repair or installation contractors.

Garage door scams are on the rise across the U.S., as homeowners increasingly find themselves overpaying for poor services provided by incompetent workers or paying for new garage doors and garage door openers that are never delivered.

Authorities recommend taking several steps to avoid falling victim to common garage door and contractor scams:

Verify licenses and registration. Ensure the business is properly licensed and registered with the state. A dissolved or expired license is a major warning sign. California garage door contractors can be verified on the CSLB website. Learn about the process here.

Limit upfront payments. Make an upfront payments to a portion of the job cost.

Get contracts in writing. A detailed contract should outline the scope of work, payment schedule, and timeline for completion.

Check references and reviews. Look for recent customer reviews and ask for direct references before committing to a contractor.

Homeowners who believe they’ve been scammed should file a complaint with local law enforcement, the district attorney, and consumer protection agencies relevant to their area. Acting quickly can improve the chances of recovering funds and may help prevent others from being scammed.

Officials are reminding residents that due diligence and clear contracts are the best defense against garage door repair and contractor fraud.

Attempting to repair a garage door on your own may seem like an exciting new challenge or a way to save money, but it can carry devastating risks, particularly when high-tension springs are involved.

Garage doors, which can weigh hundreds of pounds, are only manageable because of high-tension torsion springs or extension springs that counterbalance their weight. The springs are tightly wound with stored energy, and if that energy is suddenly released, the hardware can turn into a high-speed projectile.

Common Garage Door Injuries – Statistics and Facts

A report from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission shows that between 2015 and 2024 an estimated 163,324 garage door injuries were treated in the United States. According to this most recent data, that equals an average of about 16,332 injuries per year.

While many of these incidents are minor like pinched fingers, bruises, and bumps, the consequences can be catastrophic when a spring dislodges. Severe injuries can include deep lacerations, fractures, and, in rare cases, permanent eye damage, paralysis or even death.

Other Garage Door Injury Statistics

Some reports estimate that between 20,000 and 30,000 people are injured by garage doors each year, while others suggest the number is as high as 35,000. Other sources may suggest that:

59.5% of injuries are caused by pinched or crushed section joints.

16.5% result from falling doors.

12.7% occur during repair or installation work.

Over 7,550 Americans suffer pinching injuries from garage doors each year.

Every year, more than 2,200 Americans are injured by garage doors falling on them.

About 800 Americans suffer lacerations annually when the window glass in their garage doors breaks.

The above numbers and reports mostly come from legal firms and garage door companies. They do not reference verifiable sources or data, and the information cannot be confirmed by any official database. Therefore, it should be treated with caution.

Severe Eye Injuries from Garage Door Springs

Doctors at Massachusetts Eye and Ear (MEE) reviewed injuries treated between 2008 and 2023 and identified seven patients who suffered severe eye trauma while repairing their own garage doors. Each was struck by a spring or metal component that shot loose at high speed.

Although eye injuries from garage door accidents are relatively rare, occurring in about 3.5 per 100,000 people annually, those caused by springs tend to be especially destructive. The MEE case review reported the following cases:

A 37-year-old man sustained a lacerating injury, leaving him with only hand-motion vision after multiple surgeries.

A 59-year-old woman suffered a severe laceration affecting all ocular zones. Despite extensive procedures, she lost nearly all vision and the eye became phthisical (shrunken and nonfunctional).

A 43-year-old man developed a retinal detachment and irreversible vision loss, ending with only hand-motion vision.

A 57-year-old man with a history of retinal detachment sustained a globe rupture. After surgery, his vision stabilized at 20/125.

A 43-year-old man suffered extensive lacerations and fractures. His vision remained at light perception only.

A 25-year-old man lost all vision, and the eye eventually became phthisical.

A 60-year-old man required enucleation (surgical removal of the eye) after it became blind and painful.

Six of the seven patients sustained injuries to the back of the eye, which almost always lead to poor visual outcomes. Five developed retinal detachments, and two lost all vision permanently.

Shared Risk Factors

Despite their differences in age and background, the patients had similar experiences:

All attempted a DIY garage door repair without professional help.

All were struck directly in the eye by a spring or attached part.

Nearly all experienced permanent vision loss despite emergency surgery.

Only one patient regained limited functional vision. Other patients treated at MEE for similar accidents have suffered traumatic cataracts, orbital fractures, bleeding inside the eye, and severe eyelid lacerations.

Electrician Paralyzed by Faulty Garage Door

In April 2006, Ralph Parker, an electrician working at a warehouse in Indianapolis, was pinned by an overhead garage door that exerted hundreds of pounds of force. Investigators later discovered that an inexperienced person had overtightened a part of the garage door spring system during a service visit. As a result, the door failed to stop when it pressed against Parker’s body.

Parker, who had been on a ladder above the door, was knocked unconscious and trapped for more than half an hour until the motor pulley finally burned out, releasing the pressure. The accident left him paralyzed from the chest down.

Eight years later, a Marion County jury awarded Parker and his wife more than $18 million in damages.

Garage Door Accident Leaves Man with Severe Jaw Injuries

Even small repair jobs can turn hazardous when garage door parts suddenly fail. An Arizona man known for helping his neighbors learned this firsthand after a freak accident left him with severe facial injuries.

Marcos Gaspar was assisting a friend with a garage door opener motor when a heavy metal bar unexpectedly snapped loose. The bar swung down with tremendous force and struck him directly in the chin. The impact fractured his jaw in multiple places, requiring surgery and leaving his jaw wired shut for weeks.

Gaspar’s friend described the moment as shocking and unpredictable. “It literally just shot off the wall so fast. We don’t really know how or why, it just hit him square in the chin,” he said. The accident not only left Gaspar in pain but also unable to work during his recovery.

Why DIY Garage Door Repairs Are Dangerous

Overhead garage doors typically use two types of springs:

Extension springs along the sides of the door.

Torsion springs mounted above the door.

When these springs snap or unwind unexpectedly, they release stored energy with explosive force. The sharp edges of metal parts increase the risk of penetrating injuries such as globe ruptures, rather than blunt trauma.

Understanding the Risks and Taking Precautions

When it comes to DIY garage door repair, the most common injuries result from:

Replacing Garage Door Springs: Loaded springs (torsion or extension) can cause severe harm if improperly handled or if their high tension is suddenly released.

Getting fingers caught between door sections: Fingers can easily become entrapped between the moving door panels, or between the door sections and the wall or garage frame (jambs).

Crashing garage doors: A garage door that slips off its tracks or drops suddenly can lead to severe crush injuries.

Other risks include:

Falls: Climbing ladders or working at heights around garage doors can lead to dangerous falls.

Lifting injuries: Garage doors and door components are heavy, and improper lifting can cause back or muscle strain.

Voided warranties: DIY repairs may cancel manufacturer or installer warranties.

Electrical hazards: Mishandling garage door opener wiring or components can result in shocks or electrocution.

Extreme working conditions: Performing repairs in intense heat can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, or even heat stroke. Fatigue and dizziness increase the risk of mistakes, which can make accidents with heavy doors or tools even more likely.

Unlike mild scratches and bruises, accidents involving springs can cause severe injuries like deep cuts, retinal detachments, and permanent blindness.

According to data from the 2002 National Health Interview Survey, nearly one-third of U.S. adults reported engaging in activities that could cause an eye injury outside of work, but only about 32% of them wore protective eyewear.

The study found that men were more likely than women to use eye protection (34.7% vs. 25.2%), while young adults aged 18–24 were the least likely of all (just 15.3%). Low-income individuals, non-retired adults, and people identifying as Black or other races also had lower usage rates. Overall, the research shows that protective eyewear use in everyday high-risk situations remains low, particularly among certain groups.

Common injuries are mostly preventable when the proper safety measures are taken. Recommendations include:

Avoid DIY repairs. Garage door springs should only be handled by trained professionals with proper tools. Always hire a verified licensed garage door company for your garage door repair and installation projects.

Schedule annual service. Regular maintenance helps identify worn or damaged springs before they fail.

Schedule safety inspections. A safety inspection by a certified company can help you ensure your garage door’s safety mechanisms are working properly and remain in compliance with UL 325 requirements.

Research the problem. Should you decide to repair your garage door or replace springs yourself, first familiarize yourself with the various repair procedures, the door’s hardware and dynamics, and any common mistakes. Make sure to follow all proper safety procedures throughout the repair process.

Wear protective gear. While it is not foolproof, protective gear like gloves, safety glasses, and hard hats can reduce the severity of injuries.

Fixing your garage door without the proper experience, knowledge and tools can often do more harm than good. Underestimating the risks of garage door repairs and making a simple mistake may cause additional damage to the door, lead to a costly trip to the emergency room, or result in permanent injury.

A Modesto man who ran a garage door company has been arrested on fraud, drug, and weapons charges after allegedly scamming customers out of tens of thousands of dollars, authorities said.

George Santiago Jr., owner of The Garage Door Guy, is accused of taking full payments upfront from at least eight customers for garage door installations and repairs he never completed according to CBS News. Investigators with the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigation estimate that Santiago defrauded residents and business owners of roughly $42,600, with additional complaints still under review.

The probe began after officials received a tip through the DA’s consumer fraud reporting website, along with referrals from the Sheriff’s Office Waterford Police Services. Several victims reportedly had personal ties to a Waterford police employee, which helped bring the case to investigators’ attention.

“To date, we have eight victims with an estimated loss of just under $50,000, and further investigation is ongoing,” said Lt. John Locke of the DA’s Bureau of Investigation. “Once the press release goes out, I believe more victims will come forward.”

On August 21, investigators located Santiago in Modesto and arrested him without incident. A search of his vehicle uncovered a loaded firearm, while a later search of his home revealed two additional guns, suspected methamphetamine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia.

Santiago was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on multiple charges, including grand theft, theft by false pretenses, possession of controlled substances with a firearm, and weapons violations. He was later released on bail.

According to officials, Santiago did hold a contractor’s license through the California Contractors State Licensing Board (CSLB), but it had been suspended due to a bond issue. Authorities are awaiting further details from the CSLB.

Santiago’s suspended contractor license with the CSLB

Locke noted that contractor-related scams are not uncommon in the county, though most involve unlicensed workers posing as legitimate businesses. “99.9% of licensed contractors in Stanislaus County are doing what’s right,” he said. “Most of the concern comes from unlicensed contractors.”

The DA’s Office urged residents to take precautions when hiring garage door repair contractors: “If the price sounds too good to be true, that can be a red flag you’re about to be scammed,” Locke said.

Consumers should always take precautions before hiring a contractor for home improvement projects. One of the most important steps is to verify company credentials on the California State License Board (CSLB) website and avoid working with contractors who have suspended or expired licenses.

Even though Santiago once held a valid contractor’s license, consumers could have avoided the situation by checking the CSLB site and seeing that his license was suspended.

Protect Yourself From Garage Door Repair Scammers

Garage door scams are rampant in the U.S. and Orange County, often starting when people call a random company they find online. Scammers use deceitful techniques such as listing fake locations and using misleading credentials to appear legitimate on online platforms.

Unfortunately, search engines such as Google, Bing, and Apple refusing to address the issue because they are protected under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. Regulators have also lagged behind by failing to amend Section 230 and by allowing scammers to list shell companies with fake addresses and fictitious agent names.

Here are the steps you can take to protect yourself from bad garage door companies:

Always check the business’s license on the CSLB website before contacting a company or sharing personal information. Learn about the process here.

Don’t contact a company on the internet just because it looks like it’s located right around the corner.

Avoid businesses offering “too good to be true” discounts or bait-and-switch pricing tactics.

If your garage door suddenly breaks down and needs emergency repairs, don’t panic. Always verify the license first.

If you suspect you’ve contacted a scammer, ask them to leave immediately. Never pay in cash; always use a check or credit card. Call 911 if necessary.

Remember: Doing a little homework before hiring a garage door repair company can save you thousands of dollars and help you avoid the stress of dealing with scammers in your own home.

When James, a Fountain Valley resident, woke up to find his garage door wouldn’t open, he expected a simple fix from a local garage door company. Instead, he faced a costly ordeal. An unlicensed contractor installed the wrong door, disappeared, and left him with thousands of dollars in losses and trouble with his homeowner’s association. Unfortunately, many local homeowners face the same problem when searching for garage door companies online.

An Expensive Emergency

James’s trouble began when his garage door refused to open, trapping both of his cars inside. In a rush, he searched online for a local garage door repair service and called a company that appeared to be right around the corner. A service technician arrived the same day and quickly diagnosed the problem: a broken spring, damaged lift cable drums, and worn cables.

The technician quoted James over $2,000 for the repair service, a price he thought was excessive. However, with no other options and his cars stuck, he reluctantly agreed. The technician finished the work, handed James a generic receipt with no company details, and left.

Fake garage door companies in Fountain Valley

“I knew something didn’t feel right, but I just needed my garage working again,” James later said.

Back to Square One

For a couple of weeks, the garage door seemed fine. But then, one day, the door suddenly fell off its tracks, leaving James in the same stressful situation again. Assuming the work might still be covered by a warranty, James called back the same company.

Scammers target Fountain Valley residents near Warner and Bushard

The technician returned but offered no sympathy. Instead, he claimed the garage door was “beyond repair” and pushed James to buy a new door. Once again feeling pressured and unsure, James agreed.

Caught Between a Fake Company and the HOA

Within a few days of the installation, James received a warning letter from his homeowner’s association. The new garage door did not comply with community guidelines, and the HOA threatened fines if the issue wasn’t corrected.

Scammers target Fountain Valley residents near Brookhurst and Ellis

The following day, James tried contacting the company again, but his calls went unanswered. When he looked closer at his paperwork, he realized the receipt had no license number or even a proper business name. He had unknowingly dealt with a shell company, one that left him with no recourse and a costly mistake.

Turning to a Trusted Local Garage Door Expert

Out of options, James contacted Champion Garage Door, a licensed garage door repair Fountain Valley company, known for its long track record of working with local HOAs and Fountain Valley communities. Champion Garage Door’s experts provided James with clear explanations, proper paperwork, and compliance-focused solutions. They inspected his situation, coordinated with his HOA, and installed a new garage door that met all community requirements.

“Had I called Champion first, I could have saved thousands of dollars and avoided weeks of stress,” James admitted.

A Growing Problem for Homeowners

Reports of fake garage door companies in the Fountain Valley and Orange County area have increased as 2025 ends. Homeowners searching online for local suppliers are often targeted by shell businesses that lack a real presence, a valid license, and often use illegal or unauthorized gig workers. These scammers pose as local repair companies, preying on unsuspecting residents and overcharging them for substandard services.

Search engines like Google and Bing have been reluctant to address this long-standing problem, in part due to Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which protects them from liability. Meanwhile, regulators who are supposed to protect the very people who elected them are failing to act.

Learn How to Protect Yourself

Before hiring a garage door repair company, Fountain Valley and Orange County homeowners should always confirm the contractor’s license and verify it on the California State License Board (CSLB) website. This quick and easy step can save you thousands of dollars, countless headaches, and the stress of dealing with scammers in your own home.

Learn more about how to verify a license here.

Beware! Many scammers use fake contractor licenses or even unlawfully use a license number that belongs to a completely different company. Always verify the business’s credentials and details yourself. Make sure the company’s phone number matches, and if it doesn’t, call the number listed on the CSLB website to confirm.

Trying to cut corners on your garage door repair and installation projects can cost far more in the long run. Licensed professionals not only ensure the work is done correctly but also help homeowners stay in compliance with local regulations, HOA requirements, and manufacturer guidelines.

A quiet Monday afternoon in Newport Beach turned into an emergency response scene when hazardous materials were discovered inside a garage, prompting street closures, evacuations, and a coordinated response from multiple fire departments.

The situation began around 2:18 p.m. at a residence on Carnation Avenue, where Newport Beach firefighters initially responded to a medical emergency. Upon entering the property, crews encountered a strong chemical odor and quickly determined that a dangerous mix of household chemicals was off gassing inside the garage. Authorities later confirmed the mixture involved chlorine bleach and ammonia, which combined to release toxic fumes.

Emergency crews from Huntington Beach Fire and Anaheim Fire & Rescue were called in to assist Newport Beach Fire Department’s hazmat team. Streets near Corona del Mar, including stretches of Carnation Avenue, Pacific Coast Highway, and Bayside Drive, were closed off as officials urged residents to stay indoors or evacuate.

During the incident, firefighters rescued one resident and a dog from the home’s third floor, both of whom were reported stable. A second individual was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation. Mayor Joe Stapleton emphasized that the incident did not appear criminal in nature but carried the potential for explosiveness given the chemicals stored inside a barrel. By 4:55 p.m., the scene was declared safe and streets were gradually reopened.

The Hidden Dangers in Your Garage

The Newport Beach incident is a reminder of the risks that come with storing hazardous materials in a garage, a space where people often keep paints, solvents, cleaners, pesticides, fuels, and other chemicals. Experts recommend the following safety practices for storing hazardous materials in your home:

Always store chemicals in their original containers with intact labels. Avoid transferring them into unlabeled jars or bottles, which can lead to dangerous mistakes.

Keep chemicals such as bleach and ammonia apart. When stored together or accidentally mixed, they can release toxic gases. Fuels, fertilizers, and pool chemicals should also be stored separately.

A well-ventilated garage prevents fumes from building up. You can install vents on your garage door or garage walls or keep a window open when you’re working with chemicals.

Many hazardous materials degrade in the heat, which can cause leaks, fumes, carbon monoxide poisoning, fire or even explosion. Since garages can get quite hot in the summer, store hazardous materials in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Place liquid containers in trays or bins to catch spills before they spread across the garage floor.

How Chemicals Affect Garage Doors

Improperly stored chemicals don’t just pose health risks; they can also damage garage doors. Strong fumes and corrosive substances can corrode metal hardware, strip paint finishes, and discolor or weaken fiberglass or wood surfaces. For example, door tracks, torsion systems, bearings, cables, and springs are vulnerable to rust, which can eventually eat through the steel.

Certain chemicals can break down the insulation inside insulated garage doors, causing them to lose their energy-efficient properties. Over time, the effects of improperly stored chemicals can shorten the door’s lifespan and lead to higher garage door repair and maintenance costs.
