Whether you have an existing garage door and want to improve security, or you’re a new garage owner looking for the best lock, this guide will help you choose an effective garage door lock for optimal security and functionality.

Garage door locks generally fall into two categories: automatic and manual. However, there are further details to consider when selecting the right lock. Below, we break down the types of locks, their features, and the types of doors they are best suited for.

External Manual Garage Door T-Lock

The T-lock is designed for manual garage doors without automatic openers. It features an external handle that twists to lock and unlock the door.

How It Works: The handle connects to two horizontal wires, each linked to a latch on either side of the door that secures into a bracket. Twisting the handle retracts the wires and latches from the brackets, allowing the door to open. When closed, the handle automatically returns to its original position and locks the door.

Security Feature: The handle can be locked or unlocked with a key, preventing it from twisting when locked.

Best Use: Designed for sectional garage doors and cannot be used with single-piece garage doors (swing-up). Ideal for garages without a side door, where the garage door serves as the main entry. Not recommended for automated systems as it requires manual operation.

Internal Manual Garage Door Slide Lock

The internal slide lock is a traditional system designed to lock and secure the garage door from the inside.

How It Works: The lock has a simple handle that slides into a slot on the door track, locking and securing the garage door in the closed position. To unlock, the handle is pulled out of the slot.

Best Use: Works well for manual garage doors and can be used to improve security on automatic doors when you’re away. Ideal when you don’t need to lock and unlock your garage door from outside. Installing slide locks on both sides of the garage door provides a tighter lock and added security.

External Manual Garage Door Slide Lock

This lock allows you to lock and secure the garage door from outside.

How It Works: The handle is mounted externally on the garage door and pushed into a hole drilled into the garage frame. It is then locked and secured with a padlock.

Best Use: Commonly used with single-piece (swing-up) garage doors, but also adaptable for sectional garage doors.

Automatic Garage Door Lock

The automatic lock is a smart garage door deadbolt that locks and unlocks the door from inside the garage when you use the garage door opener.

How It Works: The lock is hardwired to the motor and installed on the exterior of the door track. It secures the door by blocking the door rollers’ path with a cylinder. When opening the door, the cylinder retracts. It extends to lock the door when closed.

Compatibility: Compatible with certain LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie garage door openers, and designed for sectional garage doors. Generally used with side-mounted (wall-mounted) openers but can also be installed with ceiling-mounted models.

Limitations: Only one lock per opener. If your garage lacks a side door or another way to get in, an automatic lock may not be ideal, as malfunctioning lock could lock you out of the garage.

Aftermarket Automatic Locks

There are also aftermarket smart deadbolts that can be used with a remote control or smartphone. While these locks aren’t typically designed for garage doors, they can be retrofitted to function similarly to the automatic garage door lock mentioned above.

Common Garage Door Locks

However, since these locks usually don’t integrate with electric garage door openers, they are best suited for manual garage doors or as an additional layer of security.

As with the previous automatic lock type, you may want to avoid these smart locks if your garage doesn’t have another entryway besides the garage door, as a malfunction could potentially lock you out.

Garage Door Lock Button

If your garage door is electric, you may have noticed a button on your garage door wall control panel with a lock icon next to it. This feature, often called “vacation mode,” isn’t a physical lock, but activating it will disable remote devices, including handheld remotes, keypads, and cars programmed to the garage door opener.

If your wall control panel doesn’t have this feature, you can replace it with one that does. You may want to consult a licensed garage door repair company or your garage door manufacturer first to ensure compatibility with your existing overhead door system.

Manual vs. Automatic Lock

Manual locks are simple to install, more affordable, and durable. On the other hand, automatic locks are more complex to install, usually cost more, and tend to experience more issues. However, they offer greater convenience, as they eliminate the need for manual operation.

While it’s generally not recommended to use an automatic garage door lock when the garage door is the only entry to the garage, an electric garage door opener can serve as an effective alternative to a manual lock for locking and unlocking the door.

How to Lock Your Garage Door Without a Lock

To lock and secure your garage door from the inside, place a vise grip or screwdriver on the door track just above a roller. This will block the door’s path and hold it in place. For added security, repeat the process on both sides. This is a quick and effective way to lock your garage door from the inside if there’s an issue with your existing door lock or garage door opener.

An alarming incident in Irvine, CA, serves as a stark reminder of the importance of home security, particularly in keeping garage doors closed. A resident of Irvine, simply out for a walk with their dog, returned home to discover a thief brazenly exiting their house with stolen property. The thief had gained access through an open garage door, but thankfully, swift action by the Irvine Police Department led to the arrest of the burglar.

This incident underscores a growing concern in Irvine and Orange County, with 26 reported thefts from garages already this year. Here are essential tips to help you protect your garage and home from such incidents:

Always Close and Lock Garage Doors

Whether you’re stepping out for a quick errand or taking your pet for a walk, ensure that your garage door is securely closed and locked as open garage door not only invites burglars but also provides quick and easy access.

Invest in Security Systems

Consider installing a security system that includes alarms, motion sensors, and surveillance cameras. These systems can deter burglars and provide valuable evidence in the event of a break-in.

Use Smart Technology

Smart garage door openers, locks, doorbell cameras, and automated lighting systems can help you to monitor and control access to your home remotely.

Maintain Visibility

Keep your property well-lit, particularly around entry points such as garage doors, gates, and windows. Adequate lighting can deter potential intruders and make your garage and home less vulnerable to break-ins.

Get Assistance from Neighbors

Establish a sense of community watch by communicating with your neighbors about any suspicious activity or concerns. Look out for each other’s homes and report any unusual incidents to the authorities promptly.

Practice Discretion

Avoid advertising your absence on social media or leaving visible signs of prolonged absence, such as piled-up mail or newspapers. These can signal to burglars that your home is unoccupied and an easy target.

These measures can help reduce the risk of burglary and protect both your garage doors and home. Consult a licensed garage door repair company to explore ways to secure garage doors effectively. Contact local police if you suspect that your garage door or home has been compromised.

A TikTok user named Blake, known as @weakankleblake, has recently shared a small and little-known security feature found in garage door openers. This video has sparked widespread intrigue among viewers on TikTok. Blake’s video already has over 1.9 million views, 105,000 likes, 7,400 saves, and 1,800 comments, generating significant interest and engagement within other users.

In the viral video, the TikToker takes us on a tour of his garage, revealing a lock feature in his garage door opener, also known as “vacation mode.” He demonstrates how this feature can be used to secure the garage door and prevent unauthorized access.

He then highlights that intruders can easily gain access to your garage and subsequently your home by entering your unlocked car and using the remote control found inside.

@weakankleblake
This is why it’s important to lock your garage at night #homesafety #safetyfirst #safetytips #lockdown #lockyourgarage #nightlyroutine
♬ original sound – weakankleblake

Many TikTokers responded to Blake’s video, with some sharing their thoughts and opinions on the matter. Some users expressed surprise and gratitude for the information, stating that they were unaware of the vacation mode feature and its implications. Others commented on the importance of securing both the garage door and the vehicle to prevent unauthorized access. Several users mentioned that their garage doors were currently broken and acknowledged the need to contact a garage door repair company for assistance. There were also individuals who shared their own experiences or provided additional tips for enhancing garage door and home security.

Here are some of the comments that TikTokers left on Blake’s video:

“Me running down stairs to lock it.”

“My garage button doesn’t have a lock”

“I’d recommend a better lock on that door to the garage like a deadbolt.”

“I be locking the door but thank you ima lock the garagee too”

It is important not to confuse the “vacation mode” of the garage door opener with an actual lock. The vacation mode feature does not physically lock the garage door but rather prevents access from remote control devices. It acts as a security measure to disable the remote control function temporarily, ensuring that unauthorized individuals cannot use a remote to open the garage door.

This distinction is crucial to understand, as relying solely on vacation mode may not provide the same level of security as using an actual lock on the garage door itself. It serves as a helpful reminder to homeowners to utilize multiple layers of security to protect their garage and property effectively.

In conclusion, the TikTok video shared by Blake (@weakankleblake) has shed light on a little-known safety feature within garage door openers, capturing the attention of viewers and sparking discussions about home security. It serves as a reminder for all homeowners to take proactive steps to secure their garage doors effectively. Along with using the vacation mode or lock feature on the opener, it is essential to lock your car, keep the garage door remote secure and take other appropriate measures.

Here are some expert tips on how to secure your garage door like a pro:

According to Sgt. Jon McClintock of the Anaheim Police Department, the burglaries are being investigated as part of an ongoing trend. The suspects are also part of an investigation into a transnational group or international crime ring, according to ABC7.

What homeowners can do to protect themselves?

There are several measures homeowners can take to protect their homes and against burglaries. Other than the traditional methods such as home security systems, homeowners and residents should consider securing their garages as well, especially if it’s an attached garage.

Garages are often neglected when it comes to home security, but there are several steps you can take to secure your garage. You may want to make sure that your garage doors are closed whenever possible and install a garage door opener with rolling code technology to prevent burglars from gaining access. It’s also important to secure the entry door between the garage and home with a sturdy deadbolt lock. Avoid leaving valuable items in your garage, and consider installing motion sensor lights and a security camera to deter burglars and monitor any suspicious activity.

In April 2023, the CISA (Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency), had listed the Nexx’s smart device product line, including their smart garage door openers controller, as vulnerable to hackers, who can gain unauthorized access to sensitive information.

Nexx Smart Wi-Fi Garage Door Controller models NXG-100B, and NXG-200, utilize hard-coded credentials. The credentials can be found in the device’s firmware (embedded software that controls the device) and can also be retrieved with a simple request within the application. If an attacker gains access to the Nexx smart garage door mobile application or the firmware, they can view the credentials and access the MQ Telemetry Server (MQ Telemetry Server is a software that enables devices to communicate with each other through a messaging system, commonly used in the Internet of Things [IoT] applications).

Additionally, these vulnerabilities allow attackers to obtain sensitive information, such as names, emails and passwords, which enables them to execute application programmable interface (API) requests, or take over devices. In other words, attackers are able to remotely control garage doors or smart plugs that are powered by Nexx.

Despite CISA’s requests for Nexx to work with them to address these vulnerabilities, no response has been received.

Nexx smart garage door controller

What users should do?

To secure your garage door and minimize the risk of attackers taking over your garage door opener, the CISA recommends to take the following defensive measures: reducing network exposure for the Nexx Smart Wi-Fi Garage Door Controller models NXG-100B, and NXG-200, and ensuring that they are not accessible from or connected to the internet. The smart door control network and remote devices should be placed behind firewalls and be isolated from networks. When remote access is necessary, secure methods like Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) should be utilized. It’s also crucial to recognize that VPNs may have vulnerabilities as well, so they should be kept up to date with the latest version available. Additionally, a VPN is only as secure as the devices connected to it.

For the average homeowner or garage door user, who aren’t tech savvy, a simpler solution would be to disable the Nexx smart device altogether and contact Nexx support for additional information about the matter. If you don’t know how to disable your Nexx garage door controller, consult a licensed garage door repair company.

COVID-19, or the novel coronavirus, is a global viral infection first identified in Wuhan, China. Cases are now found worldwide, including in the United States and California. While the concept of a widespread viral infection can be unsettling, preparation is key. This involves taking health-related precautions to minimize the risk of infection and ensuring your garage door is functional for emergency situations.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Spread

According to the Centers for Disease Control, COVID-19 can spread through person-to-person contact, primarily via respiratory droplets released when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Additionally, the virus can survive on surfaces for up to 3 days. Touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the face can lead to infection. Preventive measures include maintaining a distance of about 6 feet from others and regular surface cleaning and thorough handwashing—washing both the front and backs of hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

California & Orange County Coronavirus Cases

On March 3, 2020, the Los Angeles Times reported the first two probable cases of coronavirus in Orange County. Both individuals had recently traveled to countries with widespread virus transmission. The public health officer from Berkley, along with the CDC director, urged Californians to prepare for the virus while practicing good personal hygiene.

According to an ABC7 report, a woman in her 30s and a man in his 60s were presumed positive in Orange County. Their status remains presumptive until confirmed by the CDC lab. With expectations of more cases as testing increases, Orange County declared a state of emergency to address the potential outbreak.

Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in California on March 4. Statewide, large events and gatherings were canceled or postponed, and colleges shifted to remote learning for the semester. As of March 14, there were nearly 300 confirmed cases in the state. However, Orange County Health Care Agency stated that the county’s infection risk was believed to be low. Out of the 14 confirmed cases, 11 were travel-related. Adults over 60 were advised to avoid large crowds, cruise travel, and non-essential air travel.

Officials Urged Calm Following First US COVID-19 Death

Following the first recorded death in the US due to the virus, the Trump administration urged people nationwide to stay calm amid the spreading coronavirus pandemic. As cases increased, the government assured the public that additional testing would be available soon. The New York Times reported that the administration’s measures to combat the virus included travel restrictions to specific regions, such as Italy and South Korea.

Meanwhile, infectious disease researchers analyzing coronavirus data suggested it might be more contagious than initially thought. In China, cases surged from 300 to 21,000 in just one month. The R-naught, predicting how many people one infected individual can make ill, is approximately 2.2, meaning each sick person can infect 2 more.

Many residents have resorted to panic buying, rushing to stock up on items like toilet paper, cleaning products, and hand sanitizer. Shelves at Costco locations in Southern California were cleared of bottled water, with customers facing long lines and empty shelves. While having enough supplies at home aligns with preparedness recommendations, panic buying in response to the COVID-19 emergency may have been unnecessary.

The Possibility of Future Mass Evacuation in U.S. Cities

A mass evacuation occurred in 2020 from Wuhan, China, as countries including Australia, Germany, France, and the United States rushed to evacuate their citizens. Following the evacuation, many of these citizens were quarantined in designated facilities to ensure they were not already infected with the virus and to prevent its spread within their respective nations.

Emergency evacuations happen when people urgently need to leave an area due to an immediate threat to their health and safety. These events can be small or large, affecting hundreds to tens of thousands of people. Reasons for evacuations may include earthquakes, storms, floods, incidents involving hazardous materials, and viral outbreaks like COVID-19.

FEMA, the United States Federal Emergency Management Agency, has plans in place for emergency mass evacuations in the US. According to these plans, federal evacuation measures will be implemented when state or local governments are overwhelmed and unable to provide necessary resources. Additionally, if catastrophic incidents incapacitate state and local governments, requiring federal support, evacuation measures will be taken. This could have potentially happened in the US as the coronavirus spread, and local and state governments faced challenges in providing essential services and relief to citizens if overwhelmed.

Getting Your Garage Door Ready for an Emergency

Maintaining your garage door in good repair is crucial for ensuring your ability to leave your home swiftly during unexpected events. This involves keeping your vehicles accessible at all times. You can achieve this by performing routine maintenance, lubrication, and safety testing on your own or by reaching out to a licensed garage door repair company.

The following steps can help ensure that you’ll be able to leave your home and evacuate through the garage door in case of an emergency evacuation:

Inspect garage door springs that are more than 5-year-old and replace if necessary.

Inspect the door rollers, tracks, bearings, cables and moving parts.

Test and inspect the automatic garage door opener.

Test and inspect the door opener’s emergency release function.

Ensure that your garage door opener is in compliance with California garage door opener law.

In case of an emergency, unexpected events such as power cuts can render the garage door opener system useless. Therefore, having a door opener with a backup battery can save time during emergency evacuations, especially for residents who may have difficulty operating their garage doors manually.

Additionally, worn-out garage door parts can lead to unexpected breakdowns at the most inconvenient times, preventing you from accessing your vehicles and compromising the securing your garage and home. These risks may manifest as problems, including garage doors suddenly refusing to open, failing to close, coming off their tracks, experiencing a broken spring, a snapped cable, and other issues.

While there’s no need to panic, it is essential to take the necessary steps to be prepared. These preparations should involve having an emergency plan in place that enables efficient evacuation when and where needed. Additionally, regular checks and maintenance of garage doors are crucial to ensuring reliable access to vehicles.

The use of electric garage doors has become indispensable for homeowners, offering convenience with a simple click to open and close garage doors. While these systems save time and effort in daily routines, recent incidents highlight the significance of using automatic garage doors safely and responsibly, along with taking measures to protect our homes from potential threats.

Thieves Targeting Garage Door Openers in St. Louis County

Residents in Des Peres, West St. Louis County, experienced a wave of vehicle thefts and break-ins in late September 2019, causing concern in the community. Multiple residents were affected by these incidents, as reported by a local news network. The crimes were especially alarming as the thieves exploited an unexpected tool to access victims’ homes: garage door remote controls discovered in unlocked vehicles. This allowed them to enter people’s homes to steal items, including car keys and cars.

The surge in attempted break-ins and vehicle thefts left residents shocked. Eddie Killeen, a local resident, emphasized that these recent incidents appeared more organized, heightening the alarm among residents. Marianne Garr shared her personal experience as a victim, recalling the theft of her husband’s brand-new car in 2015. While her family remained physically unharmed, the invasion incident caused sleepless nights and deep distress. Jim Killeen, another resident, recounted a similar event involving his neighbor, who bravely followed the suspects as they fled the scene.

Eddie Killeen on KSDK local news

To address the problem, local police turned to social media, urging residents to exercise vigilance, lock their vehicles, and protect themselves from potential threats. In addition, the public safety department placed “Lock It or Lose It” signs throughout Des Peres as a reminder to secure belongings and lock vehicles. This simple action can go a long way in deterring potential thieves and protecting homes and belongings.

Garage Door Opener Theft and Home Invasion in Utah

June 2023: Blake and Tina Brown returned from vacation only to discover their Utah home had been burglarized in their absence, according to a report by Inside Edition. The thief’s method was, once again, breaking into the Browns’ car at the airport, stealing their garage door opener remote, and obtaining their home address from the vehicle’s registration.

Blake and Tina Brown on Inside Edition

This allowed the intruder to brazenly access their home through the garage door, stealing approximately $20,000 worth of property and belongings without encountering any difficulty or raising suspicions from neighbors.

Theft Surge from Unlocked Vehicles in Huntington Beach

In May 2018, the Huntington Beach Police Department issued a warning to residents about a surge in vehicle theft in the area. According to a post from the HBPD, there was a noticeable increase in theft from unlocked vehicles.

“We have seen an uptick in theft from unlocked motor vehicles in our city, especially in the Harbor and northwest neighborhoods of Huntington Beach. Take the extra minute to take all of your valuable items inside your home, and make sure to lock your vehicle every time you leave it! Many thefts are committed as crimes of opportunity when thieves try car doors in the middle of the night looking for things to take. These items range from computers, wallets and purses to money and vehicle registrations. Don’t be a victim, and remember to take it out and lock it up!”

The rise in thefts was particularly noticeable in the Northwest and Harbor Huntington Beach neighborhoods. HBPD reminds residents that leaving vehicles unlocked could result in crimes of opportunity. When thieves gain access to the garage door opener, they can easily enter the victim’s home, similar to the aforementioned Utah burglary case.

To help people become more aware, the Huntington Beach police outlined the types of items that are frequently left inside vehicles and are attractive to thieves. These items include garage door opener remotes, handbags, gym bags, keys, wallets, cell phones, laptops, and loose credit cards. The police advised against leaving keys inside the car and recommended avoiding keeping the garage door opener remote inside the vehicle whenever possible.

Effective Ways to Secure Garage Doors and Prevent Break-Ins

Let’s explore simple yet practical ways that residents can protect themselves, secure their garage doors, and proactively prevent break-ins.

1. Use Keychain Remote Controls or Carry Remotes with You

As mentioned earlier, leaving a remote control stored or unattended in your vehicle can make it an enticing target for thieves. If they manage to get hold of your garage door opener remote, they can effortlessly gain entry to your garage and home whenever they wish.

To mitigate the risks, residents can use keychain remote controls. These compact remotes resemble modern car fobs which can be easily attached to a keychain. Alternatively, keep your garage door remote control with you at all times, carrying it in your pocket, purse, bag, or backpack.

2. Stay Connected with a Smart Garage Door Opener System

The best way to monitor your garage door is by using a smart garage door opener system with a Wi-Fi capability. These systems offer more than just the ability to open and close your garage door remotely; they provide a seamless connection between you and your garage.

The opener’s app allows users to receive real-time alerts whenever their garage door is opening or closing. Smart garage door openers, available from reputable brands such as Liftmaster, Chamberlain, Genie, and Marantec, can be controlled and monitored through user-friendly apps that are free to use—no subscription fee is required.

3. Program Your Vehicle to Your Garage Door Opener

Most newer vehicles come equipped with HomeLink, a feature that allows you to program your garage door opener directly to your car. This eliminates the need to carry a separate garage door opener remote in the car. The programming process is quick and straightforward, usually performed using the buttons located on your vehicle’s rearview mirror or top console.

4. Use the Garage Door Lock Button or Vacation Mode

A valuable feature available on multi-function wall consoles is the lock button, also known as vacation mode. When activated, this function prevents the garage door from being opened using the handheld remote and any other remote devices while still allowing operation through the push bar.

Using the lock button is simple and can be done in a few steps. Press and hold down the lock button for 2 seconds until the push button indicator light begins to flash. The light will continue to flash as long as the lock button remains activated. To deactivate the lock mode, press and hold the lock button again for 2 seconds. The push bar indicator light will stop flashing, indicating that the lock mode is turned off.

In a crime alert issued in August 2019, the Newport Beach Police Department offered a valuable recommendation: “If your garage door has a remote shutoff button on the wall-mounted control, located in the garage, consider locking the door nightly.” The remote shutoff feature they are referring to is commonly known as the lock button or vacation mode.

Securing Garage Doors Against Opportunistic Crimes

Technology has greatly improved security, safety, and convenience in automatic garage door and remote-control systems. However, no system is completely foolproof. Consult a licensed garage door repair company to explore the possibilities offered by modern technologies. By staying informed and proactive, you can take advantage of the latest security features available and create a more secure environment for your family.

While it’s common to see overhead garage doors left partially open, especially in the summer, we often don’t consider how safe this practice really is. In this article, we discuss the benefits of a partially open garage door and the reasons why you may want to avoid leaving it open while unattended.

The Potential Risks of Leaving a Garage Door Open

Each time the garage door is left open or partially open, the chances of experiencing the consequences below increase.

Infestations – Insects and Vermin

An open garage door can attract various vermin and insects, including rats, birds, bugs, and mosquitoes. Pests may identify your garage as a secure location for nesting and reproduction. Unfortunately, these small animals can introduce various diseases and cause damage not only to your garage but also to your entire home. Furthermore, once these pests infiltrate your home, removing them becomes challenging and often necessitates professional help.

Burglary and Home Invasion

When moving into an affluent neighborhood, some may assume a reduced risk of burglary; however, this is not necessarily the case. Regrettably, residing in a nice neighborhood does not exempt us from the presence of thieves; in fact, it can attract their attention. Thieves often observe wealthier neighborhoods to identify potential targets, and if they spot an easy entry point, they may take advantage of the opportunity.

Taking Huntington Beach as an example, the property crime rate is 21.68 per 1000 residents. In 2020 alone, there were 480 cases of burglaries and 3,007 cases of theft per 100,000 residents, according to City-Data.

This reality is underscored by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, which has issued crime prevention tips emphasizing that thieves can steal items from open garages in less than 30 seconds. A poignant example is a 31-year-old Anaheim resident who managed to sneak through an open garage door and swiftly steal an Olympic gold medal.

In another incident reported by Irvine police, a residential burglary took place. While the article did not explicitly mention the entry point, it appears that the burglar gained access through the garage side door, potentially exploiting a partially open garage door. Stolen items in this case included a cellphone and laptop. Following the incident, Irvine police issued a reminder to the local community, urging residents to always close and lock home windows, garages, and doors, even when the residence is occupied.

Nothing Beats a Failure but a Try – A True Story

When Paul, a homeowner in Long Beach, took his car to the dealership for servicing, he never expected what would follow. One hot summer afternoon, he opened his garage door slightly to let in some cool air, leaving it partially open while he went back inside.

About an hour later, while relaxing and watching TV, Paul heard his car’s engine start and the garage door opening. Rushing outside, he discovered a young man attempting to drive away with his car. Paul shouted, startling the intruder, who fled on foot, leaving the car behind.

When the police arrived, they collected fingerprints from the scene and eventually tracked down the intruder. Surprisingly, the person worked at the dealership’s repair shop where Paul had serviced his car. It turned out that the intruder had made an extra car key while the vehicle was at the shop overnight and had access to Paul’s information through the auto shop’s files.

Days later, the intruder seized the opportunity and visited Paul’s home, waiting for the garage door to be partially open. Taking advantage of the situation, he crawled underneath and accessed the vehicle.

Compromised Garage Door Opener

Leaving your garage door partly open might expose you to a more sophisticated scheme. It’s surprisingly simple for an intruder to crawl through the gap, reach the electric garage door opener, and access the opener’s code by programming their own remote-control device. Once accomplished, they can return at their convenience and gain access to your garage and home.

More Frequent Repairs and Maintenance

Even in the modern era, garage doors come with a limited lifespan and will require maintenance and repairs over time. Each time you open your garage door, you add wear and tear to the door’s mechanisms, such as springs, rollers, bearings, hinges, etc. The increased usage accelerates the wear on these mechanisms, leading to more frequent repairs and visits from your local garage door repair company.

So, Why Should You Leave Your Garage Door Partially Open?

Typically, people crack their garage doors open to improve ventilation or let cool air in during the summer or allow their pets to move in and out. Without the help of a proper ventilation system, garages often become stuffy and uncomfortable to work or spend time in, potentially impacting the temperatures inside the house.

A Partly Open Garage Door: Does It Make the House Cooler or Hotter?

A partially opened garage door can cool down your garage and improve ventilation. While it may help lower the temperature in both the garage and adjacent rooms by allowing cool air to flow through the gap, insufficient ventilation could lead to heat rising and entering the rest of your home. So, how can you efficiently regulate the temperatures in your garage and home?

1. Proper Insulation

Depending on your location, controlling the temperature of your home, especially your garage, can be challenging during the summer months. Having well-insulated garage walls and roof, double-pane windows, vents, and installing an energy-efficient or insulated garage door with a decent R-value can make a significant difference while avoiding the aforementioned risks.

2. Improve Ventilation

You can utilize the principle of convection to more efficiently ventilate your garage and home. As the temperature in the garage increases, the hot air molecules gain kinetic energy and begin to move faster, causing the hot air to rise as it becomes less dense.

Improve Ventilation in Your Garage

Roof ventilators can significantly improve air circulation and ventilation in the garage. These ventilators will facilitate the flow of hot air out through the garage’s ceiling. Allowing the hot air to escape will not only improve ventilation but also create suction to pull in replacement cooler air through your partially open garage door.

How to Leave a Garage Door Cracked Open

If you have an electric automatic garage door, you can leave it partially open by pressing the opener’s wall button or remote control until the door reaches the desired position, then press the button again. Note that you should do this during an opening cycle. Pressing the opener’s wall button or remote control during a closing cycle (while the door is closing) will cause the garage door to open fully. Alternatively, you can manually open the garage door to the desired position using the emergency release pull.

Mitigating the Risks of an Open Garage Door

For many of us, our garage is more than just a place to park our cars; it serves as a barrier, an entryway to our homes and a storage space for both invaluable and valuable items. Although leaving your garage door partly open might seem like a completely normal thing to do, this habit can result in various issues.

To help mitigate the risks, modern overhead door systems offer a variety of security features. Many garage door openers come with a built-in camera or a Wi-Fi connection that enables you to add a camera. These smart garage door openers also allow users to program a pre-set schedule to open or close the garage door, as well as alert the user if the garage door is open for too long. This not only helps in securing your garage but also contributes to keeping your family and home safe.

If you suspect that your overhead garage door or opener has been compromised, consult a licensed garage door repair company as soon as possible.

The garage is often the most vulnerable area in the house, as it not only contains valuable possessions like vehicles but also, in many cases, serves as an access point to your home. Experienced burglars can take advantage of this vulnerability in various ways, such as using a stretched-out wire hanger to ‘fish’ for the emergency cord and disengage the door from the opener, making it manually operable.

Nevertheless, there are measures you can take to improve the security of your garage door and, by extension, your home. In this article, we’ll explore the most effective methods for improving your garage door security from inside and outside.

1. Rolling Code Garage Door Openers

The first generation of garage door openers used DIP switch technology for their receivers. This technology can make garage doors more vulnerable to intruders, as they may attempt to guess the switch combination being used to open the garage. If successful, they can gain access to the garage.

Rolling Code Garage Door Receiver

If you have an older garage door opener that utilizes DIP switch technology, you may want to consider replacing its receiver with a more secure one. Modern receivers use rolling code technology, which encrypts the signal and communicates using over 100 billion unique codes. It’s important to note that some opener models have their receivers integrated into the motherboard. To use rolling code technology, you’ll need to replace the entire garage door opener.

2. Use a Secure Keyless Entry Code

Keyless entry systems, such as keypads, require the garage door owner to program a code that connects the keypad to the garage door and allows it to open. Avoid using standard and simple codes like ‘1234’ or your house number, as they are not secure choices. It’s also advisable to avoid of using birthdays since social media can make such information easily accessible. Instead, choose a unique code that doesn’t have any obvious connection to your home or personal identity.

3. Secure Your Garage Door Remote

As simple as it may seem, avoid leaving your garage door remote control in your car, whether it’s visible or not. Even if your remote is clipped to the visor for easy access, it leaves your garage and, by extension, your home vulnerable to theft if the remote is stolen from your car.

Instead, consider carrying the remote with you or invest in a mini keychain remote that attaches to your keys for added convenience. Additionally, many cars come equipped with the HomeLink feature, which allows you to program your car to operate the garage door opener. This way, you won’t need to keep a remote control inside your car.

4. Secure Your Garage with a Lock

Utilizing an interior deadbolt or a garage door lock remains the most effective way to protect your garage against potential intruders. Modern electric deadbolts offer the convenience of automatic locking and unlocking via remote devices. However, not all opener models and brands are compatible with these automatic deadbolts.

Automatic Garage Door Lock

For example, many modern Liftmaster and Chamberlain door openers are often compatible, while Genie, Marantec, and Linear models typically are not. If you choose to use a manual lock, you’ll need to exit your vehicle and physically lock and unlock the garage door. While this method may be less convenient and somewhat old-fashioned, it remains a reliable security solution.

5. Secure the Door from the Garage to Your Home

If your garage is attached to your house, make sure to lock and deadbolt the door that links your garage to your living space. In the event of a compromise of your garage door, you wouldn’t want your entire home’s security to be at risk.

6. Use Privacy Garage Door Windows

Just as you wouldn’t leave valuables on display in your car, the same logic applies to your garage. Clear windows on a garage door can make it easy for intruders to assess what’s inside, increasing the risk of theft of your car, tools, or other possessions. If security and privacy are a concern, consider tinting or frosting the garage door’s windows. This way, you can maintain natural sunlight while keeping the contents of your garage obscure and less visible. Alternatively, you can choose a windowless garage door.

7. Secure the Emergency Release Cord

Burglars can easily use a stretched-out wire hanger to reach through the door’s gaps, hook your emergency cord, and manually open the door. To prevent this, you can secure the opener’s trolley latch to the trolley itself using a zip tie. Another option is to consider removing the red emergency release cord. It’s important to note that in emergencies, using a zip tie may make it challenging to disengage the door from the opener, and removing the cord will also affect accessibility to the trolley’s latch.

Using privacy glass for your garage door’s windows can also help prevent unauthorized access to the emergency cord, as limiting an intruder’s view into your garage makes it more difficult for them to locate the emergency cord and attempt to open it manually.

8. Secure the Garage Exterior

Motion sensor lights are a classic deterrent for would-be thieves. When these lights suddenly activate, they draw the attention of passersby, making intruders nervous about the possibility of getting caught. Another option is to install surveillance cameras. Many high-end modern garage door openers come with built-in cameras, although the camera is typically located on the opener’s motor head inside the garage.

9. Strengthen Your Garage Doors

As obvious as it seems, but not all garage doors are equally strong and sturdy. Weaker doors can be vulnerable to intrusion, whether by kicking or cutting tools. Consider investing in a robust door, such as a wood garage door or a 3-layer insulated garage door, which offer improved structural strength and better security.

10. Upgrade Your Garage Door with Smart Technology

Forgetting to close the garage door is a common oversight, especially when rushing. Modern garage door openers come with built-in Wi-Fi connectivity systems (older openers can often be retrofitted). These smart garage door systems link to a dedicated smartphone app that sends alerts when the garage door is left open or when the door opener is in use. The app also provides real-time status updates, allowing you to monitor and control the garage door remotely from anywhere.

11. Keep Garage Doors Closed

Many residents keep their garage door shut and locked when they are not home or at night; however, they may leave it open or partially open when they are home. The problem is that it only takes a moment for anyone walking by to notice an open garage, step inside, grab something of value, and then be gone before you even know anyone was there.

12. Keep Garage Doors in Good Repair

Garage doors that are well maintained and kept in good working order greatly reduce the chances of burglary. Weakened locks, damaged panels, faulty opener, and other problems can give a determined thief an opportunity to make their way into your garage and home pretty easily.

Why Should You Secure Your Garage Door?

With over 1 million burglaries occurring every year in the United States, the burglary rate is 4.42 per 1,000 residents in Orange County, CA, and 2,178 per 100,000 residents in the entire state of California. Given the potential for break-ins everywhere, keeping your home and belongings safe is as easy as ensuring your garage is secure.

While no security measure can provide absolute protection, implementing these measures can substantially reduce the risk of a break-in and enhance your garage door’s security. If you have concerns or anxiety about the security of your garage door, it’s advisable to consult a licensed garage door repair company. They can offer valuable insights into common methods intruders may use to breach your garage door and recommend the best security measures to secure your garage and home within your local area.
