In August 2018, Honeywell Total Connect enabled the integration of its security systems with LiftMaster and Chamberlain garage door openers. This advancement allows users to consolidate all features into a single, simple app, facilitating a more connected and secure experience whether at home or away.
The Chamberlain Group (CGI) has a history of strategic partnerships with companies like Amazon, Ring, Magna, and IFTTT to better serve their customers’ needs. The integration with Honeywell’s Resideo is a notable addition to this collaborative effort.
About Honeywell Total Connect
Honeywell Total Connect is a remote services platform and security system that enables users to control their home, garage, or property alarm system and automation through a web browser or a smart device. With Total Connect, users can access real-time information and control various connected devices, including security systems, thermostats, lighting, cameras, and garage door openers, from any location. The platform also features event notifications, video surveillance, and automation control, allowing users to stay connected to their property and respond quickly to security concerns.
Total Connect comes with a basic package, and users can add products to improve the safety of their home, garage, or facility. The integration of Chamberlain’s MyQ and Honeywell Total Connect allows users to:
- Monitor and control connected garage door openers.
- Open and close their garage doors remotely from anywhere in the world.
- Set up and receive activity alerts so know a garage door is open.
What Is MyQ Technology
The MyQ technology, developed by Chamberlain Group, enables users to remotely control and monitor their garage doors, lights, cameras, and other connected devices through a mobile app or web-enabled device.
Integrated into products such as various garage door openers, gate operators, and lighting controls, the MyQ app allows users to perform actions such as opening and closing garage doors, toggling lights, and receiving real-time alerts for door status. MyQ can integrate with popular smart home systems like Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit, enabling voice-controlled access to garage doors.
While newer LiftMaster and Chamberlain garage door openers come equipped with MyQ and Wi-Fi technology, older openers manufactured after 1993 that do not have MyQ can be connected to the network by retrofitting the Chamberlain Smart Garage Hub, available separately.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Having a Smart Home and Garage
Having a smart home and garage door openers come with their own set of advantages and disadvantages. The advantages include:
- More Control Over Your Environment: Smart homes allow users to control everything from garage doors to heating and air conditioning with a simple touch, providing an easy and more convenient way to access, monitor and control their home.
- Enhanced Safety: Smart homes contribute to a safer living environment. Security cameras and alarms enable users to monitor their homes and garages remotely through connected devices. Users can lock and unlock doors, set alarms, and receive alerts.
- Increased Independence and Quality of Life: Individuals with limited mobility, including the elderly, often experience a decline in independence. Smart homes enable them to perform tasks easily with just a few button presses.
- Energy Savings: While smart home technology may have an initial cost, it often leads to significant savings and reduced energy consumption. For example, a smart home-controlled thermostat can save users anywhere from 10% to 35% on their utility bills.
The disadvantages include:
- Cost: Setting up a smart home can be expensive. However, users can mitigate costs by gradually adding smart devices over time rather than paying for everything upfront.
- Reliability: Although modern technology facilitates a more stable internet connection, inconsistent internet service can still cause frustration and impede the effective monitoring and control of the system.
- Learning Curve: Adapting new technology comes with a learning curve. While tech-savvy individuals may find operating a smart home easy, those less familiar with technology might encounter some initial challenges.
- Privacy Concerns: Despite the security measures integrated into smart products by companies, smart home systems can raise privacy concerns as anything connected to the internet is susceptible to hacking.
- Sedentary Lifestyle: An unintended consequence of smart homes is the potential to encourage a more sedentary lifestyle. Individuals may become more inactive as they can perform various tasks through smart devices instead of physically interacting with the environment.
