Did the Broken Spring Damage Your Opener?

When a spring snaps, your garage door becomes extremely heavy, often 200+ lbs. Activating the opener after the spring breaks can place excessive strain on the system, potentially causing secondary damage. Common secondary issues include:

If damage is found, we can often rebuild the opener or realign and reinforce the door panel during the same visit, helping you avoid the cost of a full replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my garage door spring is broken?
The most obvious sign is a loud “bang” that sounds like a gunshot. Other signs include a door that is too heavy to lift manually, a door that opens only a few inches and stops, or a visible gap in the coils of the torsion spring above the door.
Why do garage door springs break?
The most common cause is metal fatigue. Every spring is rated for a specific number of cycles (one open and one close). Once the spring exceeds its rated lifespan, the steel eventually fractures and snaps. Factors like rust, lack of maintenance and other conditions can accelerate wear and cause premature failure.
What should I do if my spring has snapped?
A snapped spring makes the door extremely heavy and dangerous to operate. Do not attempt to lift or open the door with the opener, as this can damage the motor or gears. Contact a certified professional immediately for safe repair.
How should I prepare for my spring service appointment?
Clear a workspace of at least 4-5 feet back from the door so service technicians can set up a ladder safely. Ensure the torsion assembly (above the door) is accessible and keep all pets secured inside the home.
Can I fix a broken garage door spring myself?
No. Garage door springs operate under extreme tension, and an incorrect move can cause severe injuries such as crushed fingers, lacerations, or blunt-force impact. DIY spring repairs can also damage the door system and void manufacturer warranties. For safety and proper operation, always hire a qualified garage door professional. Licensed technicians have the proper tools and training to replace springs correctly.
Who should I contact to repair broken springs?
Always contact a licensed garage door contractor. In California, hiring an unlicensed worker puts you at financial risk if they get injured on your property. Licensed companies carry liability insurance to protect you. Learn why you should hire a licensed contractor.
How much does spring replacement cost?
Spring replacement typically ranges from $190 to $1,500, depending on the door size, spring type (standard, heavy-duty, or custom), and the complexity of the installation. Our certified technicians provide an accurate cost estimate after inspecting your garage door, ensuring you know the price upfront before any work begins. Learn more about garage door repair costs.
Do you sell garage door springs directly?
Yes. We sell a wide variety of torsion and extension springs to the public. However, due to safety risks, we only recommend DIY installation if you have prior mechanical experience and the correct tools. View our springs inventory.
Can you replace my broken spring today?
Yes. We offer same-day spring replacement throughout our service area. Our trucks arrive fully stocked with a wide range of spring sizes, allowing us to complete the repair in a single visit.
Should I replace both springs if only one is broken?
Yes. Springs are installed in matched sets and lift the same weight. If one breaks, the other is likely near the end of its life cycle. Replacing both ensures your door remains balanced and saves you the cost of a second service call a few months later. Learn more about replacing both springs.
Should I replace the bearings when fixing the springs?
It is highly recommended. Since we have to remove the torsion tube to replace the springs, accessing the bearings is easy. Replacing worn bearings now prevents noisy operation and future failures for a very small additional cost. Learn more about garage door bearings.
Is it better to have one or two springs?
A dual-spring system is always preferable. Two springs provide better balance, smoother operation, and an added safety measure: if one spring breaks, the other helps prevent the door from crashing down. Learn more about 1 vs. 2 garage door springs.

Stop looking! These guys are the best. On a Friday morning at 6:30 AM I called them for a problem with our garage door at our rental property. They said they would be there at 10:30. By noon it was fixed and much less than I expected. Then they took the time to tell me exactly what they did and what to do to prevent it in the future.

These people do business like they did in the old days, great customer service with no surprises!

Add me to the “100% satisfied customers” list! Woke up to a broken garage door the other day, checked online and saw all the awesome reviews so I gave them a call. Paul was so sweet and said that they might be able to swing by within the next few of hours. lucky for us, Jaime was able to squeeze us in! He was great, handled the repair work and checked everything else out (checked cables, greased the rollers, etc) to give us a heads up on anything that might be popping up in the near future. Told me that the bearings on the garage door opener might be wearing a bit but said “just keep using it until it goes” and gave me a few options for what to do when that happened. I will recommend this garage door company to anyone who asks, and thanks for their excellent customer service! They are the best!!!

They were amazing. They picked up the phone last night after I called freaked out when the garage door broke. They said they were booked but would call me in the morning to see if they could fit me in. They called me at 9 after I had talked to 3 different companies. Something about talking to them the first time made me want to wait to see if they could come out and boy am I glad I waited. The other companies felt kind of shady and since I was going to be home without my husband I didn’t want to be worried. They showed up by 10:30 a.m.! They quickly assessed the situation, explained it to me in layman’s terms, and got to work. By 12 the door was fixed! Service was super friendly and not pushy. I asked “do we need a new garage door opener” and they explained to me how they work and why we don’t need one just yet. When we do need one I’ll be calling Lakewood Garage Door Champion to put one in! Can’t recommend them enough!
