In the world of home improvement, a garage door shop is typically the last place you’d expect to uncover a criminal enterprise. After all, who thinks twice about a small business fixing squeaky rollers and malfunctioning remotes? But in Orange County, Florida, what looked like a humble garage door repair shop turned out to be the front for a high-stakes and illegal gambling operation.

On June 9, deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, in coordination with the Florida Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE), executed a search warrant at what appeared to be a legitimate garage door repair company, purportedly specializing in LiftMaster garage door systems.

But what they found behind those doors wasn’t garage doors or garage door openers. It was eighteen illegal gaming machines, thousands of dollars in unreported cash, and one very surprised community.

Illegal Casino Disguised as Garage Door Repair Shop

Gambling operations disguised as legitimate businesses aren’t just the stuff of crime dramas. They’re real and potentially pose very real threats to public safety. These underground casinos could attract not just gamblers, but a slew of related crimes such as drug trafficking, money laundering, and violence.

They’re also notorious for operating in the shadows of otherwise peaceful neighborhoods, giving law enforcement a complex task: separating the innocent from the illicit.

“Illegal after-hours and gambling clubs pose a significant threat to public safety – and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office will shut you down,” the department warned in a public statement.

The Orange County raid was the result of careful investigation and cooperation with the Florida DGE, which helped identify the signs of unauthorized gaming. The successful bust was a victory not just for law enforcement, but for the surrounding community that might never have guessed what was really happening behind that service bay door.

A Reddit user was getting ready to leave for work and encountered an unexpected problem: his garage door wouldn’t open, trapping the car inside.

He noted that his garage door is manually operated and that he handles it with care every day. Despite a routine inspection of the tracks, rollers, cables, and springs, everything appeared in good working order. However, the door feels as if it’s anchored to the concrete and won’t budge.

As posted by AwayBad2283

The user included some pictures of the garage door and spring, hoping to get useful advice on how to repair his broken garage door.

Potential Causes and Solutions

Based on the description of the problem and pictures provided by the user, several potential issues could be preventing the garage door from opening.

1. Loose Spring

While the pictures confirm that the spring is not broken, the tension from the spring might have gotten loose, rendering the spring useless and door cables loose. In this case, all it takes is to re-tension the spring and balance the door.

2. Obstructed Tracks

Loose bolts, debris or obstructions in the tracks can prevent the door from opening. Inspect the tracks and ensure they are clean and unobstructed.

3. Damaged Rollers or Hinges

Damaged or worn-out rollers and hinges can cause the door to stick. Check them for any signs of wear or damage. If needed, replace the rollers or hinges and test the garage door.

4. Garage Door Lock

Sometimes, a manual garage door has a lock mechanism that might have been engaged accidentally. Ensure the lock is not engaged. If it is, disengage it and try lifting the door again.

5. Binding Garage Door

Weather conditions or shifting foundations can affect the garage frame, which may impact the garage door operation. Inspect the garage frame and header to ensure that the garage door is not pressured against them. Remove any nails, screws, or drywall that may be obstructing the garage door and preventing it from opening. If the door is positioned too close to the garage frame, you can adjust the tracks by pulling them away from the jambs.

6. Recent Paint Job

Painting the garage door can cause it to stick against the garage frame, weather stripping and moldings. If the garage door has been recently painted, you may need to gently pry it loose from the vinyl moldings and leave the door open until the paint dries.

7. Bottom Seal Stuck to the Floor

The garage door rubber bottom seal can sometimes stick to the floor, especially in damp or cold weather. Inspect the seal for any signs of sticking. You may need to gently pry it loose or replace the seal if it’s excessively worn or damaged.

Although the aforementioned problems are usually the most common ones, the user stated that his garage door’s top section somehow found its way underneath the garage header, preventing him from opening the door.

“Somehow the top of the garage door bent its way underneath the header of the garage! A little elbow grease & it unstuck!”

The issue could be related to shifting foundations or weather conditions. The problem can be fixed by adjusting or replacing the top molding. If the molding is too short, a 2×4 stud can be used.

A TikToker shares her broken garage door in a TikTok video, hoping to get useful advice from the community. In the video, you can see the garage door closing, hitting the floor, then popping back up and stopping halfway, followed by two beeping sounds.

The TikToker stated that she came back from vacation to a broken garage door and asked for someone smart to help her fix it. Did it help her repair the garage door? Let’s find out.

@katherinevharris
Guys why is my garage door broken i literally got it a month ago how do i fix this someoke smart help me please #garage #garagedoor #homeowner
♬ original sound – Katie Harris

Some users pointed out that there might be a problem with the door safety sensors, commenting:

“Hear me out, this happened to me. There was a big bug dead on my door sensor. Removed it and it worked.”

“Yes ours does that if it has the sensors on the bottom and the light shines just right. We just took the sensors off.”

“Our sensor wasn’t able to see the other one. I bent the metal a bit and it fixed it lol.”

“If light is shining on the sensor, that can cause the door to do that as well.”

Well, would you take advice from the TikTok community about repairing or maintaining your garage door? Neither would we. The door sensors are a safety device designed to prevent the garage door from closing if there are objects blocking them or during a malfunction. In the video, the door is closing just fine, thus ruling out any issue with the safety sensors.

While some TikTokers were just guessing, others were a bit more helpful, commenting:

“Why not call the company who installed it??”

Later in the video, the TikToker is seen climbing on the side of her car after she “Googled” the problem. She then tries to use a screwdriver, sticking it in all the wrong places.

So, what should the TikToker have done? First, use the manual release cord to open the door manually and pull the car out of the garage. Second, read the error code from the broken garage door opener and refer to the OEM owner’s manual, not an internet search engine. Third, find the solution from the owner’s manual troubleshooting chart and fix the garage door. Problem solved in less than 15 minutes.

In a Reddit post, a member of the Fixit community shared their ongoing issue with broken garage door bearings and hinges, expressing frustration: “My garage door continually breaks the bearings, and now 5 of the brackets are broken.”

Sectional garage doors with a torsion assembly typically include multiple hinges between the sections, with the side hinges also housing the door rollers within their shaft. The door also incorporates two to four bearings, with two situated on the end plates. Additionally, one bearing is typically assigned to each pair of torsion springs, usually positioned in one of the spring’s stationary cones.

Let’s review the reasons why hinges and bearings may break and explore ways to address them to prevent the aforementioned breakdowns and avoid costly garage door repairs down the road.

1. Broken Garage Door Springs

Operating a garage door with a broken spring is not only hazardous but also overloads the components, leading to structural stress and potential breakage of the door mechanisms, including bearings and hinges.

The door’s torsion springs are situated horizontally on the header, above the garage door. Inspect the spring’s coil to see if it has split in two. You can also disengage the door from its electric opener by pulling the emergency release cord while the garage door is fully closed, then lift it manually to assess its weight.

2. Imbalanced Garage Door

A garage door may be out of balance due to decalibrated, incorrectly sized, or worn springs. Incorrect torque output from the springs can cause the garage door to be excessively heavy or to pull up. An imbalanced condition overloads the garage door and can result in recurring breakage of the bearings, hinges, and other mechanisms.

Test the garage door balance by disconnecting it from the opener when the garage door is fully closed. Ensure that the garage door stays closed and doesn’t pull up on its own. Lift the garage door slowly to your waistline and release it. The garage door should remain in position, neither slamming shut nor pulling up. Lift the garage door to a fully open position, and again, it should stay in position.

3. Wrong Garage Door Hinge

Hinges that cannot handle the garage door weight may become overloaded, deform, and break. Another factor to consider is the numbering system, which indicates the pivot point distance from the hinge’s base. Incorrect numbering installed can cause the garage door to bind against the garage frame when opening and closing.

Broken Garage Door Hinge

Ensure that the hinges are installed in the correct order from the bottom, with hinge number one connecting the bottom and second sections. Note that only the side hinges are numbered.

4. Misalignment of the Torsion Assembly

There are two types of torsion assembly misalignment, including offset or parallel misalignment and angular misalignment. In both cases, misalignment increases friction and applies excessive pressure on the garage door torsion tube and bearings. This will wear out the inner race of the bearing, damage the rotational direction of the bearing’s inner race, and may cause it to pull out of its position.

Inspect the torsion assembly, end bearing plates, and torsion tube. Ensure that they are properly aligned and situated at a straight angle. Look for black powder residue and metal shavings in the bearing area.

The Consequences of Broken Bearings and Hinges

Broken hinges and worn bearings generate excessive friction, leading to binding and potential safety hazards. This issue may result in the cables coming off their pulley, causing the garage door to come off its tracks. It can also lead to sudden breakdowns, with the garage door not closing properly, getting stuck in the open position, or stuck partially open. While some off-track breakdowns can be mild and repaired, others can be quite complex, resulting in the garage door crashing down and causing severe damage to the door’s panels and the equipment.

Recurring garage door breakdowns usually indicate underlying issues. Inspecting the garage door and addressing problems in a timely manner can prevent accidents, damage to the surroundings, and ensure the safe and reliable operation of overhead garage doors and openers.
